A MAN has died on a Herefordshire road.

A 19-year-old man died following an accident on the A438 Leadon Way, Ledbury, at the junction with Martins Way last night. The accident occurred at 11.33pm when the man’s Ford Fiesta was in collision with a Volvo HGV articulated lorry.

The Fiesta driver was pronounced dead at the scene and the 63-year-old lorry driver received non-life threatening injuries.

Police say the Fiesta was emerging from Martins Way onto the A438 and the HGV was travelling along the A438 towards Gloucester.

All the emergency services attended the scene and the road was closed for several hours as police collision investigators examined the scene.

Two fire crews from Ledbury attended and Alec Mackie, press officer for the fire service, said: “We managed to get the HGV driver out through the back of his cab. Then we put lighting up to help the police investigation team.”

Two ambulance crews, an incident support officer and two BASICS doctors from MARS (Mercia Accident Rescue Service) also attended.

Chris Kowalik, press officer for the ambulance service, said: “The lorry driver, a 63 year old man, had lower back pain. Crews treated him at the side of the road and immobilised him with the use of a spinal board and neck collar.

“He was then taken to Hereford County Hospital for further assessment and treatment.”

Herefordshire’s coroner has been informed. A post-mortem will be carried out and an inquest is expected to be opened and adjourned later in the week.
