BORDERS residents affected by mental illness are being offered a helping hand after volunteers swam more than 5km to raise funds for a new support group.

Four people raised more than £400 to set up the Rethink Borders Friends and Relatives Group, which will provide a network of helpers giving advice and information.

Based in Presteigne, the group’s first meeting will take place on December 1 at the Assembly Rooms and will feature a talk from psychiatric nurse Chris Storer explaining the mental health system in Powys.

Future topics will include registering as a carer, talking therapies and the complications of living on the border of two countries.
