FIRE crews were called to a pub in Whitecross this afternoon when a cooker in the kitchens went on fire.

Two appliances from Hereford went to The Monument at around 2.15pm but found the flames had already been extinguished.

Firefighters did have to ventilate the building, however, with fanning equipment to get rid of excess smoke.

The cooking appliance in the kitchen that was on fire was a grill. The staff were praised by the fire officer and the manager for implementing the correct procedure. Supervisor Crystal Lathwell did an exceptional job controlling the situation and extinguishing the fire. It could have been a lot worse had Crystal not acted so quickly. It should be a reminder to all pubs and restaurants, that staff training is vital and the importance of clean filters, which in this case reduced and isolated the fire.
