A HEREFORDSHIRE couple decided to ask for donations instead of presents to celebrate their diamond wedding.
Hazel and Brian Williams, from Peterchurch, raised £400 for the Parkinson’s Association – a charity close to their hearts as two of Hazel’s brothers have suffered from the disease.
The couple married in Turnstone on October 16, 1948, after meeting at a dance at Peterchurch Hall.
After the war, the couple lived in rented accommodation before moving to Sunnyside, where they lived for 48 years, and then to their current bungalow in Peterchurch.
Brian, aged 85, was originally a farmer in the village before working for Herefordshire County Council on the roads and as a groundsman for Peterchurch and Kingstone secondary schools.
Hazel, aged 80, worked for Golden Valley Stores and as a cashier for a Hereford shop and was also a volunteer for the WRVS.
She believes that the secret to their long marriage has been talking about their various activities.
“Brian played cricket for the Golden Valley, football for Peterchurch and was also a keen tennis player,” said Hazel.
“Therefore talking about our activities has kept us together.”
Brian and Hazel have a daughter Linda and a son Robert, as well as five grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.
