THE number of people going to church in the Diocese of Hereford held firm despite a national slump.
Church of England statistics show a weekly average of nearly 13,000 people in churches across the diocese, while the figures show a 1% fall in attendance nationally.
The diocese also saw a rise in the amount given by churchgoers – £5.14 in 2006 compared to £4.71 the previous year, a 9% rise.
Spokeswoman Anni Holden said: “We are really pleased to see our figures holding up despite a slight fall nationally.
“Considering the demographics of the area we serve, a 9% rise is quite amazing. People in our diocese obviously still see their parish church as important to them.”
The Diocese of Hereford is one of the most rural and sparsely populated in England. It includes churches in Herefordshire, south Shropshire and parts of Worcestershire and Wales.
