ONCE again, the people of Herefordshire turned out in force in St Peter’s Square, Hereford, to honour our war dead.
Old or young, they were there. Veterans, chests ablaze with medals and with even the smallest child somehow understanding the solemnity of the occasion and managing two minutes’ silence with barely a squeak. All of them there to show their respect.
What a pity, therefore, that Herefordshire Council was unable to show respect for those gathered there.
As the representative of the council grandly laid his wreath, did he spare a thought for those he represents who stood amid the detritus of yet another Saturday night?
Standing, as I and many others had to, adjacent to the contents of someone’s stomach splattered over walls and pavement (the result of another night of successful binge drinking, I assume) I wondered what exactly this bloated over-paid council is for. Remembrance Sunday doesn't come as a surprise.
There’s 12 months to get it right. I’m sure there is an excuse, let’s hear it.
MIRANDA LEE, Gladestry.
