IF a Steinway grand could be considered the Rolls-Royce of pianos, then a Fazioli is a Ferrari. Svelte to look at and agile in response, one such was imported last Saturday into Shire Hall by the indefatigable promoter Richard Wilson for a recital given before a large and enthusiastic audience by the gifted Malaysian pianist Bobby Chen. The start was delayed by fifteen minutes, but Bobby Chen seemed unfazed, beginning his programme well with a romantic rendition of Bach’s Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue in which he used the instrument’s tonal range to draw some marvellously clear lines, notably in the Fugue.

THE Hay Makers’ Gallery completes its 21st anniversary year of exhibitions by welcoming back three successful past artists – jewellers Jan Fryer with her bright metallic contemporary look and Alison Englefield, whose original brooches are made from layered silk paper, textiles and sequins, decorated with silk threads and fragments of antique fabrics and embroidery.
