THE astonishing 'World Roots' weekend of music kicks off tomorrow at 8pm in the Sheep Music Dome on the Presteigne Industrial Estate.
The event brings together an unusual selection of bands in an unusual setting, among them The Bedouin Jerry Can Band which first emerged as a band out of the remnants of the Six Day War in the Sinai desert, where they discovered more peaceful uses for all the bits and bobs left over from the fighting.
Chart toppers Nizlopi, meanwhile, once played gigs in people's front rooms although since their number 1 single, The JCB Song, they are more likely to find themselves headlining one of the big pop festivals.
Pete Mustill, who is organising the gigs for Sheep Music, thought that such strange bedfellows deserved an equally strange setting - hence the beautiful white canvas geodesic dome set on a grassy bank between two industrial units.
Nizlopi and The Martin Harley Band open the weekend tomorrow evening, the former no strangers to Presteigne, while the lesser known Martin Harley Band, described as "a band with a genuinely fresh take on the blues", are just beginning to get radio play for their new album, Grow Your Own.
Saturday's show features The Bedouin Jerry Can Band and The Destroyers, a 15-piece group fired by the energy of Eastern European music.
Tickets are available in advance from TIC, The Judges Lodging, Presteigne, on 01544 260650.
